Just before the War of 1812, the original village of Head of Broadkill was renamed to Milton in honor of the English poet John Milton. History and literature are still an important part of the community and is education and the preservation of the local homes and landmarks. Milton was also once known as the “Holly Capital of the World”; producing giant American Holly plants that grow to as much as 60 feet. At one point, the village engaged in a successful button making industry, creating buttons from shipments of mother-of-pearl from Europe.

Fishing enthusiasts can head to nearby Broadkill Beach or Cape Henlopen State Park for a day or an afternoon of some of the area’s finest fishing spots. Surrounding the village are a number of flatland roads offering beautiful scenery for cyclists.
Milton is well-known for agriculture and wonderful farmers’ markets. You can buy the freshest summer fruits and vegetables directly from local gardeners and farmers, and the area also produces soybeans, corn and chickens.
For many residents, Milton embodies its namesake’s work - “Paradise Found!”
