Tiny Fenwick Island is one of Sussex County’s smallest residential towns. Included in Delaware’s short list of “Quiet Resorts”, Fenwick Island attracts a variety of homeowners, although you’ll only find about 350 permanent residents. Fenwick Island does not actually sit on a barrier island – it is part of a very narrow peninsula. The town is still relatively isolated, and its history includes legends of pirates landing on Fenwick to bury their treasure. While no one has recovered these legendary riches, much of the Delaware Coast offered refuge to pirates during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Fenwick remains largely untouched by modern progress – it just incorporated in 1953, and then only as a counter-measure against the increasing encroachment of high-rise development from Ocean City.
